Scot Smythe, co-captain of Carmel-By-The-Sea CERT program, accepted a check from the Community Emergency Response Volunteers (CERV) of the Monterey Peninsula, donated by Hayward Lumber in Pacific Grove.

Smythe thanked Bill Hayward, Owner, and Willy Nelson, Manager of Hayward Lumber in Pacific Grove, noting that their donation has helped the Carmel CERT team acquire needed equipment and provide first aid training in CPR to their team, which has 33 members strong and is sponsored by the Carmel Police Department under the leadership of Corporal Rachelle Lightfoot. Scot Smythe and Wanda Volmer are co-captains of Carmel CERT’s program.

Bill Hayward said, “Hayward Lumber considers its business a crucial part of a reliant community disaster response effort.” CERV Board members, Lee Whitney, Sarah Blackstone and Gene Rizzo noted that Hayward Lumber is a long-standing and valued partner, helping to distribute water and other items to Big Sur residents during the Soberanes fire and most recently, enabling CERV to store generators refurbished by Gene Rizzo, which CERV donates to vulnerable residents during disasters.
